Ang Lee: My Fave Moments & Performances

Updated: May 5, 2023

With my In the Scene: Ang Lee book now out (woo hoo!), here are some of my fave moments and performances.

Do get in touch if you'd like review copies, or would like to book me for a podcast chat, an online talk, or an in-person event (once things are open again!).

Huge hanks to all those who helped this book on its journey to print under such extraordinary circumstances.

You can listen to me talking about Ang Lee on Chichester CineFile podcast (from 33 mins), and SAVE THE DATE for an online Talk for Westminster Libraries on Wednesday 11 November, 6.30pm (details on how to book etc TBC). The focus of this Talk will be focus on actors that Lee 'discovered' ie young actors whose debut or career-changing roles were in an Ang Lee movie, or more established actors that were challenged and gave performances atypical of their reuptation at that point.

Here's a reminder of Lee's eclectic film output and some of my favourite performances and moments...

Top Performances by an actor under 30

L-R: Tang Wei in Lust Caution, Joe Alwyn in Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, Kate Winslet in Sense and Sensibilty and Jake Gyllenhaal & Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain.

Top Performances by an actor over 30

L-R: Liev Schreiber in Taking Woodstock, Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Kevin Kline in The Ice Storm and Harriet Walter in Sense and Sensibilty.

Most Romantic Moments

Willoughby (Greg Wise) and Marianne (Kate Winslet) in the rain in Sense and Sensibility, Ennis (Heath Ledger) smelling Jack's shirt in Brokeback Mountain, Elinor (Emma Thompson) and Edward (Hugh Grant) finally declaring their love to one another in Sense and Sensibility and Jake (Henry Goodman) telling his son why he stays with his wife in Taking Woodstock.

Two 'events' I'd love to be at...

L-R: The wedding banquet in The Wedding Banquet and Picnicing with the Dashwoods in Sense and Sensibility.

and Two I'd rather not attend...

L-R: The key party in The Ice Storm and trying to get to Woodstock in Taking Woodstock.

The most beautiful shot that works well as a gif... Zhang Ziyi as Jen Yu in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

Thank you #AngLee for 30 years of intelligent, moving, groundbreaking filmmaking.

Get in touch if you would like a review copy, or would like to book me for a podcast, talk etc.
