#52FilmsByWomen - 13th 'Year' of films Directed by Women

Updated: May 5, 2023

With the notional 'year' element that came with the #52FilmsByWomen pledge out the window, this is now my 13th batch of 52 films since starting in 2016. This blog covers films watched between May and July 2022 directed/co-directed by women.

In this batch of #52FilmsbyWomen, 5 were re-visits, the remaining 47 new to me. The 52 consisted of 23 feature films, 12 documentaries and 16 silent short films. The latter as part of my viewing project to watch at least one film a year #directedbywomen, I'm working my way from 1939 to 1896. You can find links to 2021 - 1940 via the he 1969 - 1940 blog.

From the 35 feature length documentaries and films which were new to me, my top 10 were:

  • The Kindergarten Teacher (2018, Sara Colangelo)

  • Queen of Diamonds (1991, Nina Menkes)

  • Working Girls (1931, Dorothy Arzner)

  • Take the Lead (2006, Liz Friedlander)

  • Bergman Island (2022, Mia Hansen-Løve)

  • Peasant Women of Ryazan (1927, Olga Preobrazhenskaya)
