A teaching gig in Gerrards Cross and the desire to see Giffords Circus which at the time was pitched in Barrington, Oxfordshire saw me spending a couple of days in Witney, Oxfordshire where I visited its cinemas (past & present) and screening spaces. En route home I stopped at Everyman Winchester, so some bonus pics!
You can read related content via my Cinemas Near Me: Gerrards Cross post from my 2022 visit there. BTW, I still didn't see a film at their Everyman, but did stop by St James's again to leave some flowers for Margaret Rutherford and Stringer Davis. Giffords Circus was a very special evening, you read more about that too! Nights at the Circus: Giffords Circus, Barrington.
Witney has a five screen multiplex Cineworld right in the town centre next to Marriots Walk shopping centre (and free car park). I managed to catch a screening of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) in screen 4 as part of #Disney100 celebrations. It still had the power to enchant the 30 or so people of all ages on a Friday morning.
p.s. want their carpet!
The previous evening I had found the Corn Exchange on the High Street. It's primarily a live performance venue now, but does have film screenings too. Note: the Juliet balcony is a new addition. There I saw a fab take on two of Shakespeare's tragedies Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet. A cast of four delivered a fast-paced and funny version of each play in 40 minutes apiece. The former Palace Cinema on the High Street is now a Wetherspoons, the Company of Weavers. They have a history panel detailing their cinema heritage, but unclear how much of the interior is original, but anyhoo here's some pictures which may be of interest! Like the signage, that certainly leans into a 'cinema' past!
To break up a long(ish) and very rainy car journey home I stopped for lunch and a movie at the Everyman Winchester, so some bonus pics! Having seen Disney's first animated film on Friday in Witney, the next day I caught up with its most recent in Winchester, Elemental, which was really rather charming.
